Some birds at the Docks

Some photos of birds seen at Portbury/Avonmouth docks, sent in by dock workers going about their everyday business!

At least 6 pairs of Oystercatchers and 2 pairs of Ringed Plovers bred at the docks this year. Once a nest is located, the dock workers plant a traffic cone nearby to alert others to avoid the area. It seems to work a treat.

Avonmouth dock is usually better for the breeding waders. Portbury dock has more green areas and wildlife
corridors which are good for the small birds such as Cetti's Warblers, Reed and Sedge Warblers

Oystercatchers
5 pairs bred at Avonmouth & 1 pair at Portbury

Ringed Plover (Dunlin in background)
1 pair bred at Avonmouth & 1 pair at Portbury

Grey Herons & Cormorants regularly fish in the pools & rhines

Buzzard
regular at Portbury, less so at Avonmouth
The rocky sea defences within the dock perimeter are also good for Wheatears on passage, both in spring and autumn.

Black Redstarts also occur from time to time and bred at Portbury in 2008 (see the Avon Bird Report for details).
